Deputy Minister Aziz Pahad to Co-Chair the SA-Chile Joint Consultative Mechanism with Chilean Counterpart, Under-Secretary Cristian Barros, Friday, 19 August 2005

Tshwane - South African Deputy Foreign Minister Aziz Pahad will on Friday 19 August 2005, co-chair with his Chilean counterpart, Under-Secretary Cristián Barros the second session of the South Africa-Chile Joint Consultative Mechanism at the Diplomatic Guesthouse in Tshwane.

The bilateral political and economic consultations are aimed at consolidating relations between South Africa and its partners in the South, examining existing bilateral co-operation in various fields, maximising trade and investment opportunities as well as technical cooperation between both countries.

The meeting of the Joint Consultative Mechanism follows President Mbeki's State Visit to Chile in June.
Issues on the agenda on bilateral consultations are expected to include, among others:

  • The status of bilateral political and economic relations between South Africa and Chile;
  • Current developments in Africa and in Latin America;
  • Co-operation initiatives between both countries in the fields of trade, finance, defence, science and technology, and agriculture; and
  • Other issues of mutual interest including reform of the United Nations and its institutions.
