President Thabo Mbeki Concludes Visit to the UN General Assembly ahead of Tanzanian State Visit to South Africa

NEW YORK - South African President Thabo Mbeki, accompanied by Mrs Zanele Mbeki, concluded his visit to New York on Saturday 17 September ahead of the Tanzanian state visit to South Africa scheduled for 23 September 2005.

President Mbeki led the South African delegation, including Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuman to the Millennium Review Summit and the 60th Session of the UN General Assembly to review progress made in the implementation of millennium development goals and to deliberate upon the comprehensive reform of the United Nations including the Security Council.

With the return of President Mbeki to South Africa, Minister Dlamini Zuma, will now head the South African delegation, including Director-General Dr. Ayanda Ntsaluba to the remaining sessions of the UN General Assembly and further bilateral discussions.

Earlier on Saturday, Minister Dlamini Zuma held bilateral discussions with her US counterpart, Secretary of State, Dr Condoleeza Rice before attending the Non-Alligned Movement's Ministerial Meeting on Palestine.

During his visit to New York and on the margins of the UN General Assembly and the Millenium Review Summit, President Mbeki, supported by Minister Dlamini Zuma, held bilateral discussions with leaders of Seychelles, Canada, Portugal, Iran, Israel and Uganda and received courtesy calls from the Foreign Ministers of Palestine and Burkina Faso.

In addition President Mbeki met with former Canada Prime Minister Jean Chretien, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees Antonio Guterres and the UNCTAD Secretary-General, Dr Supachai Panitchpakdi. President Mbeki also witnessed the announcement of further investment into South Africa by the New York Common Retirement Fund.

Upon his return to South Africa, President Mbeki will host Tanzanian President Benjamin Mkapa for a three day state visit to South Africa.
