History of Relations

Diplomatic relations with Suriname were established on 3 February 1995. On 28 January 1999, South Africa's non-resident Ambassador, Ms T Luthuli-Gcabashe, presented her credentials in Paramaribo. High Commissioner T H Chiliza, resident in Kingston, Jamaica, has already received agrément and presented his credentials in Paramaribo during 2001.

Exports to Suriname in 1998 were too minimal to be reflected in the official statistics. The astronomical increase in value of imports from Suriname in 1998 consisted almost exclusively of oil, which comprised 6% of SA's total imports of this commodity.
