South Africa and Turkmenistan established diplomatic relations in 1992. The Embassy in Ankara is accredited on a non- residential basis to the Republic of Turkmenistan.

Visa Requirements for South Africans

South Africans need to apply for visas when visiting Turkmenistan.

The following is needed to process a visa application:

·         Passport

·         completed application form

·         2 passport photographs

·         US $41 for a one month entry visa

·         an invitation letter, certified by the Consular Service Division under the MFA of Turkmenistan

·         2 completed visa questionnaire forms

What business opportunities are available in Turkmenistan?

Turkmenistan, a desert country, sit atop vast resources of natural gas. These reserves are being developed and pipelines are planned or being built to export gas to Turkey in the west, Pakistan to the south-east and Iran in the south, to supplement the existing pipeline to and through Russia.

Engineering and supply opportunities may arise as these projects come to fruition.

How does one reach Turkmenistan?

Ashkabad, the capital, is served by Turkish Airlines from Istanbul as well as by other foreign, Russian and domestic airlines.
