:: Message from Ambassador Fikile Magubane
Dear Reader,

It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the Web-site of the South African Embassy in Madrid.

For those of you who are looking for useful information on South Africa we have endeavoured to supply you with some of the most relevant links which hopefully will provide the answers that you are looking for whether they are of a political, economic or social nature.

For those of you who don’t know South Africa at all, I would like to welcome you to browse through our website and I trust that you will find this journey of great interest.

For our Spanish visitors to our site, you will remember that South Africa successfully hosted the 2010 FIFA World Cup, in June and July last year, the first country to do so in the African continent. With this tournament we again proved that we are a country that seeks excellence. According to FIFA more than 3 million spectators watched the 64 matches in the stadiums, making it the third largest ever World Cup. The World Cup showed that South Africa has the capacity to organize and stage premium world events such as these.

This year South Africa hosted the 17th Conference of the Parties (COP17) to the United Nations Framework Convention of Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the 7th Session of the Conference of the Parties serving as the meeting of the parties (CMP7) to the Kyoto Protocol which took place in Durban from 28 November-9 December 2011. This is probably one of the most significant gatherings of nations to discuss the future of our planet and we can proudly say that South Africa successfully hosted this UN Climate Change conference.

South Africa is an exciting and vibrant destination. In the 20 or so years since Nelson Mandela was released from prison our country has made great strides. We have a stable political system that has seen four rounds of peaceful democratic elections since 1994. Our economy is dynamic and strongly interconnected with the rest of the globe. We export a vast range of products to many countries in all continents. Our foreign policy is predicated on making South Africa, the African continent and the rest of the world a better place. It is for this reason that we are heavily engaged in the work of the African Union, the United Nations and other important international organizations.

This website is but a small window into South Africa which we have on occasions referred to as a World in One Country. Here you will learn more about our beautiful country. You will also find important links to other websites providing specific information on trade, investment opportunities, tourism information, and to our government in general.

Perhaps we might interest you enough to consider paying a visit to our country and allowing us to welcome you to our shores.

Thank you! Fikile Magubane
