Statement on Closure

The Government of the Republic of South Africa regrets to inform the public and its stakeholders that the South African Consulate-General in Milan, Italy has been designated for closure by the South African Government. The Consulate is one of 10 diplomatic missions that have been designated for closure.

The South African Government deeply regrets the decision taken to close the missions. However, the financial situation in South Africa, heavily exacerbated by the economic and social impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic has meant that the Government has had to take difficult decisions.

Although the Consulate-General in Milan is closing, South Africa will continue to be represented in Italy by the South African Embassy in Rome. South Africa sincerely values its relationship with Italy and its people and will continue to look towards developing a stronger relationship with Italy through the ongoing presence of the Embassy in Rome.

In this regard, all Consular, Civic, and Immigration services at the Consulate in Milan will cease from 31 October 2021. All new applications shall be undertaken in Rome. In addition, the status of any outstanding applications should also be followed-up with the Embassy in Rome.

The official date of closure of the Consulate in Milan is 15 December 2021, at which point all economic and political activities cease and be taken over by other South African diplomatic offices within the region.
