On 17 June 2016, Consul General Ms Maropene Ramokgopa met with the Regional Director of the Confederation of Indian Industry (Western Region), Dr Saugat Mukherjee. The purpose of the meeting was to identify areas of possible cooperation between the Confederation and South Africa businesses.

The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Western Region is responsible for three of the States that fall under the Jurisdiction of the South African Consulate General, and these are: Maharashtra, Goa and Gujarat. The CII spoke of the need to create a forum that would enable members to explore business opportunities in South Africa. It was agreed during this meeting that the Consulate and the CII will arrange B2B meetings between SA and Indian businesses in the areas of diamond cutting, tourism, and pharmaceuticals, agro-processing and financial services. These sectors are not limiting and should there be more areas of possible cooperation the CII and Consulate will continue to assist business.

Nelson Mandela International Day
Every year on 18 July — the day Nelson Mandela was born — the UN joins a call by the Nelson Mandela Foundation to devote 67 minutes of time to helping others, as a way to mark Nelson Mandela International Day.

This year the Consulate in partnership with South African State Entities, Businesses and Partners spent 67 minutes with underprivileged children, under the care of Smile Foundation, in Mumbai. This included painting of two classrooms and a lunch with the children. The Consulate also called upon others to take up this challenge too and join hands to helping those less privileged in India.

Smile Foundation is a national level development organisation directly benefiting over 400,000 children and their families every year, through 158 welfare projects on education, healthcare, livelihood and women empowerment, in more than 700 remote villages and slums across 25 states of India
