Office of the Chief State Law Adviser (IL)

The Office of the Chief State Law Adviser (IL) consists of two components:

  • the State Law Advisers
  • the South African Treaty Section.

 

We provide the following services:

  • legal advice and inputs to the South African Government as a whole on international law to ensure that international agreements are not in conflict with international law or with South Africa’s international obligations
  • legal advice and inputs to the Department of International Relations and Cooperation and all missions abroad to ensure that within the domestic context, in particular in respect of departmental matters, including policy, the department acts in conformity with South African law
  • Treaty and Information Service, the custodian of all international agreements South Africa is a party to, and providing an effective information service specialising in domestic and international law.
